we were recently asked to design 15 villas adjacent to the winery we completed a few years ago at los senderos just outside san miguel de allende in mexico. here’s the initial thoughts on the siting of the buildings and their overall concept.
the master idea is that rather than have the villas look at the vineyard, they are in the vineyard, among the rows of grapes. we picked up on the ideas already at play in the vineyard building. there are ribbons of stone walls that slope gradually from very low (less that a meter) to perhaps 3-4 meters at their highest points. The villas work in a similar way to the original building in that there is a sculptural solid form that wraps up and over the stone wall. this time, the sculptural element is folded in more of an origami way, folded planes, creating both solid walls (where privacy is wanted between villas) and walls of glass toward the views, vines, and water elements.
